Westminster International College(WIC) staff usher in the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Monkey

A Chinese New Year gathering was held for all WIC staff on 2 February 2016. We had a small gathering after our weekly staff meetings in one of the classrooms. All of the staff members gathered around a table together for the Prosperity Toss ceremony, which is also known as ‘Yee Sang’. This ceremony is symbolic for the Lunar New Year as it represents prosperity, good luck and health. Yee Sang is a traditional dish that comprises of mainly fresh and pickled vegetables, candied peels and fresh fish such as salmon. These ingredients are then topped with a special plum sauce which gives it a distinctive flavour. During the ceremony, the ingredients wrre tossed together by all the staff members as they exclaimed ‘Loh Hei’ which literally means to ‘move upwards’. It is symbolic of the wish for our fortunes to rise and expand during the forthcoming year. The significance of the tossing is to wish for abundant luck and happiness for all. After the tossing ceremony, the staff members of WIC ate together as a family enjoying the company of each other.
